What do you get the man or woman who has everything, for Christmas? Why, a blogload of spanking artworks by legendary artists that they probably haven't seen before of course! And now you can, thanks to the vast archive of issues of Janus, Februs, Fessee and many other magazines on the Spanking Art Wiki.
Magazines like Janus and Februs weren't just collections of photos and stories about naughty young ladies getting soundly spanked. As 'proper' publications they also contained articles, editorial columns, book reviews, etc. - many of which were illustrated by the likes of Paula Meadows.
For anyone who struggles with gifts ideas around Christmas (or Valentine's Day, anniversaries, birthdays...), the article 'For the Girl Who Has Everything' in Februs 5 provides a handy shopping guide for the disciplinary minded...
Like the illustrations of the Readers' Letters, many of these pictures haven't been seen online, perhaps because they are smaller or sometimes don't explicitly show disciplinary matters...but they are certainly worth a look!
The magazines' illustrated editorial musings were mostly saved for Februs, though as something of a forerunner, an autobiographical account of Paula Meadows' adventures in New York was published in Janus 50. I'm sure it was repeated in one of her books, and two of the illustrations are widely found on the internet. I'm don't think I've seen this one before though...
'Whip them both, and make sure you do a good job,' Mike ordered her. |
And then in Janus 86, 'The Professionals' provided an account of the writer's experiences with 'professional spankees', which jumped out at me if only because of my own writing about such experiences...
As editor of Fessee and Februs, Paula had a column in every issue (which had various titles throughout the run), illustrated by herself of course.
Several decades later, it's very interesting to read her musings on spanking, and life in general...
Always happy to help couples with disciplinary matters, in Februs 23 Paula espoused the adoption of CP as a method of therapy, to be prescribed by therapists for treatment of overly submissive or overly dominant personalities.
The highlights though are probably the always-stimulating accounts of the spanking parties she attended...
Paula's Diary in Februs 5 was a description of the spanking magazine industry's Christmas party, where Paula...
walked into a large...room where three of my typesetters were already kneeling semi-naked on the settee with their bottoms in the air being joyously thrashed with a martinet by a sub editor...
Janus and Februs often contained interviews, but these understandably tended to be illustrated by photos of the participants in action rather than drawings. Early issues of Februs did contain 'The Confessional': anonymous interviews illustrated by Paula. In Februs 1, the 'confessor' was a man who placed an advert offering to punish wayward wives. Apparently he had some interest, but only met up with one actual husband and wife (with the wife being the driving force).
In Februs 4 Paula interviewed a female submissive who served three masters (G, K and M).
The Letters page of Februs also contained book reviews, with the covers of some of the books reviewed being as enticing as the office girl on her stepladder illustrating the column...
Other articles in the magazine, often written by Julie Holmes, covered pretty much every aspect of the spanking lifestyle...
There was a 'Who's Who' of spanking in Februs 7:
An illustrated dictionary of useful terms in Februs 10...
'The Very Cunning of the Scene' in Februs 11 considered the best locations for punishment scenes.
Let's not forget the garden...snooty lady of the house being cut down to size by the hired hand... |
In a similar vein, 'The Domestic Scene' in Februs 19 is a comprehensive guide to spanking (and more) all over the house...
No wonder this young lady is looking worried!
'Touch Me Feel Me' in Februs 15 considered the best things for a lady to wear (or not wear) for spanking...
Whereas 'Clothing of Delight' in Februs 27 demands that men put as much effort as women into dressing for discipline... a view I very much echo!
'Consult Our Private End' in Februs 26 is a delightful account of all the ways a female submissive can't help revealing her freshly caned bottom throughout the day... at the doctors, in the health club, in the communal changing room at a clothing store (were those really a thing?!)
Even now, these articles provide a fascinating insight into the world of CP...
For example, the BDSM Munch is a surprisingly recent phenomenon, judging by an article in Februs 37...
There were also historical and literary articles.
I'm sure everyone with an interest in spanking is aware of its presence in Kiss Me Kate, but the article 'The Spanking of the Shrew' in Februs 35 make a very good case why spanking scenes should also be included in the play on which it is based.
Christmas may almost be over, but that doesn't mean the treats will stop coming from the classic spanking magazines. There is plenty more unseen artwork to sustain us well in the New Year!
